Lunenburg Kayak Rentals & Tours
WELCOME TO LUNENBURG KAYAK RENTALS!
OUR MISSION
We are an eco-tourism company owned and operated by Michael Bastarache. Explorer, artist, poet, musician, storyteller and proud Nova Scotian, Michael had worked in the boat building and lobster fishing industries before establishing Lunenburg Kayak Rentals in 2023. The company was born from a desire to provide locals and visitors alike with a safe, enjoyable and memorable sightseeing experience that has a positive impact on our community. Our goal is to showcase all that Lunenburg County and the Atlantic Ocean have to offer, while remaining dedicated to environmental preservation. We guarantee that your experience with us will be unique and charming, and that our staff will go above and beyond to make that happen. Whether you would like to have a one on one tour or maybe require special needs for your tour or rental, please let us know and we will try our best to accommodate. Lunenburg Kayak Rentals is proud to be an inclusive company, all are welcome with or without any paddling experience.
OUR LOCATION
We are located just a four minute drive from the heart of Lunenburg. Our shop is nestled beside the Sunnybrook Mill Market, where a trickling fresh waterfall meets a narrow and protected inlet that leads to the beautiful Atlantic Ocean. The Sunnybrook Mill Market is open every Saturday and Sunday, so if you’re lucky enough to visit us on the weekend, you’ll be able to check out some crafts or grab some snacks from the wonderful owners Royal & Karen. Surrounding our shop are the most picturesque views of their farm where most of the local products for the market are grown. You might even get a glimpse of the goats wandering around the property. This location was not chosen for convenience, it was hand picked for its beauty and many different options for sightseeing by boat.
EXPERIENCES OFFERED
- Paddling under small bridges that intersect Hermans Island’s many inlets.
- Exploring the uninhabited islands of Mahone Bay by water, or going ashore for a stroll.
- Paddling up to the Lunenburg Yacht Club Clubhouse for a lunch at the restaurant.
- Visiting the Second Peninsula Provincial Park for a break or picnic (with access to public washrooms and picnic tables)
- Visiting several white sand beaches such as Bachmans Beach (on the coastline) & Coveys Island (at sea)
ON-SITE AMENITIES
- Private parking for our guests.
- A portable toilet.
- Common area including several picnic tables.
- A beautiful hippy trailer beside our dock that serves as our shop, but also provides you with a private place to get changed or store your belongings.
EVENTS
We are proud to host a free summer folk music concert series. All of the information regarding this concert series can be found in the SATURDAYS BY THE SEA section on this site.

Seaweed Tours
At Seaweed Tours we believe that taking the time to sit back and enjoy the moment is an essential part of living life well.
Taking time to see what is around us.
To hear laughter, and to listen to ocean waves.
To smell the air we breathe, and to maybe taste a drop of saltwater spray from the water’s edge.
With Seaweed Tours we explore the Town of Lunenburg’s UNESCO World heritage sites as well as many of the beautiful Lunenburg County rugged shorelines and authentic fishing villages located within our county, such as Blue Rocks, NS. We take you to the special places where you experience a real sense of what the past was truly like and how that past is in many ways still alive and present today.
The Hidden Gems that you experience and discover first hand on our excursions, along with a Local’s perspective, knowledge, and stories, make this tour, each and every time, a one of a kind experience.
We’ll share with you our stories while you make a few new ones of your own to take home.

Blockhouse Trading Company
Blockhouse Trading Company has been owned by Peter for over 30 years. The original building, from a century ago, was a quarter of the size it is today. The lower level of the other half of the building was originally attached to the Games store across the street, and was a Post Office. Our counter in our shop comes from there, as do the built in shelves. The second level was built later under ownership of the Ernst family.
Both the previous owners of the store and Peter were avid collectors of history, information, and eclectic items. This, along with our appreciation of vintage design and quality, led to the concept of a display of local history to complement the vintage themed store.
Additionally, we value our community and want to help support local charities. Locals can cosign, sell, or donate vintage items to us. We also aim to help counsel local seniors and their families with preparations for downsizing and navigating the difficult process.
We hope the community shares their stories of local characters and events and adds these to our historical exhibit or online forum.
Specially chosen charities benefit from our annual donations which are based on the total sales of consignments items.

Exotic Fruit Nursery
Exotic Fruit Nursery is a small and unique organic nursery business located on our 33 sunny acres in Lunenburg on the South Shore of Nova Scotia, Canada.
We specialize in the sourcing, sale, propagation, and growing of hardy uncommon and easy-to-care-for fruit trees and other unusual edible fruit and perennial plants suited for the climate of the South Shore. Everything we do at our nursery is guided by sustainability and permaculture principles.
We carry delicacies such as Pawpaws, Persimmons, Passionfruit, Chilean and Pineapple Guavas, Mulberries, Figs, Nut trees and hardy Citrus.
One of our favourites in the greenhouse is the Pineapple Guava, - a beautiful small tree covered in large fragrant edible flowers that melt in your mouth like marshmallows. The fruit also are delicious and refreshing.
We started the uncommon fruit nursery because we really like plants and fruit - but mostly because we care about our community, environment, food security and health.
With the EXOTIC FRUIT NURSERY we strive to:
- Make fresh fruit growing fun and affordable
- Enrich our local food supply by bringing delicious and nutritious delicacies to the area
- Reduce the carbon footprint by growing exotics locally
- Extend our growing season with uncommon fruit that grow nearly year round
- Create a food forest and edible landscape for people to visit, enjoy and learn
We offer fruit trees, bushes and vines at compatible prizes as well as expert advise on plant care, growing and fruit production. In our ever expanding Showcase Food Forest Orchard, Garden and Greenhouse we grow the plants we sell and test them for disease resistance, hardiness, fruit production and taste. All our plants are organically grown and we also mix our own organic potting soil.
We are open for plant sales Fridays and Saturdays from 10am-5pm. All other days by appointment.

Melissa Morrison Jewellery
Located in the small seaside village of Petite Riviere, on the South Shore of Nova Scotia, Melissa’s studio is a place where beautiful things are imagined, cultivated, and created. Working under the mantra, ‘Explore, Create & Connect’, Melissa describes her designs as wild hearted, modern heirlooms with meaning beyond adornment. Inspirations for her designs are often sparked by the spirit of a distinct moment, interpretations of natural forms, or based on intuition, resulting in an unusual organic sense of beauty. Many of the textures and nuances in Melissa’s jewellery are the reaction to a direct hands-on process, which is achieved by either carving wax or mark making on metal by hammering and embossing.
Visit www.melissamorrison.ca or connect with Melissa on social media by searching @melissamorrisonjewellery You’re invited to stop by her new retail location: 3422 Hwy 331, LaHave, Nova Scotia. Directly across from the iconic LaHave Bakery!

Silastial Glass
Rick L. Silas is a master of cold worked glass, artists, innovator, and creator of cold bent glass.
One of the processes Rick developed (and patented) is a way to shatter and bend tempered glass at room temperature while maintaining structural integrity. This process allows Rick to bend the glass around existing structures, such as stair railings, without machinery or the high cost of a hot glass installation. He named and trademarked these processes, “Silastial™ Glass.”

Jan Hull - The Stoneist
I love thinking of the potential in a rock - the potential of what it could look like, but beyond that, how it will make me or others feel when we look at it. I enjoy the unexpectedness of books and violins and flowering trumpets and simple sentinels realized from the sand stone.
